In West Africa, a region where soups are integral to life, Egusi is a major soup ingredient and a common component of daily meals. Coarsely ground up, they thicken stews and contribute to widely enjoyed steamed dumplings. Some are soaked, fermented, boiled, and wrapped in leaves to form a favorite food seasoning. Families in some West African countries can eat the crop year-round and it is in high demand from countries in the Central African sub-regions too.

The seeds are often shelled and can be eaten individually as a snack, many processed forms of the seeds have made their way into common cooking practices. After soaking, fermenting, or boiling, the seeds take on different flavors and are frequently added to thicken soups and stews. On their own, the seeds can also be roasted and ground into a spread like peanut butter. With further preparation, egusi-seed meal can be pressed into patties to be used like a meat substitute

  • It is made up of 30 – 40 % protein, and about the same proportion of oil. The oil is cholesterol free.
  • Egusi has very high nutritional value. It is rich in protein, fat and vitamins A, B1, B2 and C. In terms of vitamins, it contains alpha-tocopherol, a component of vitamin E.
  • It also contains palmitic, stearic, linoleic and oleic acids and very small amount of carbohydrate and calcium.
  • 78 % of the fat is unsaturated fatty acid, which is protective to the heart.
  • The alpha-tocopherol found in egusi is a component of vitamin E that helps in maintaining smooth young skin and good fertility.
  • It also contains palmitic, stearic, linoleic and oleic acids important in protecting the heart.
  • The egusi can also be an important supplementary baby food, helping prevent malnutrition.
  • Blending the seeds with water and honey produces a milky liquid that can be used as formula if breast milk is unavailable

  • Next Day delivery is only available for orders within Ottawa only.
  • Orders must be placed before 5pm to ensure next day delivery

  • We offer a  flat-rate price of $15.99 for every single order over $50 in Ontario
  • Shipping rates on orders outside of Ontario are variable depending on the weight of the product(s) and the shipping address. Please note that our selected carriers within Canada deliver on Monday - Friday. They do not deliver on Saturdays and Sundays.
  • Shipping costs are based on the method you choose at checkout and your location. Your shipping charges are usually discounted and will automatically calculate during the checkout process, prior to completing your order.
  • Standard Shipping may take between 3 – 7 business days depending on your location


Refund Policy

We offer full refunds on any unopened, unexpired items in good condition within 7 days of purchase. All we ask is you provide a receipt, confirmation number, or other proof of purchase date. Any discounts used, except for shipping discounts, will be subtracted from the refund.

Refunds can only be made to the credit card or account used for the purchase. Once we receive your item and return is approved, we will issue a refund to your original method of payment. You will receive the credit within a certain amount of days, depending on your card issuer's policies.


Cancellation / Return / Exchange Policy

Return Policy

You can return non- perishable items within 7 business days. All we ask is that you return these items with their original packaging. If you are not sure you are keeping an item, please do not open or remove seal (if applicable).  

For perishable items like your frozen foods, item return is limited due to hygiene concerns. When your delivery arrives, we will go through your order with you. If there is anything you’re not happy with, you can hand it back and we will replace the item or issue you a refund. Perishable items cannot be returned after we leave because of hygiene concerns.

Rush delivery?

If you need your order by a certain date please make a note in the ‘note section' of the shopping cart. Choosing Express shipping, does not guarantee that your order will be considered as rush delivery. If it's not possible for your order to arrive by your desired date, we will notify you by e-mail (please double check your e-mail address).

  You will need to be available for delivery since we cannot leave your frozen foods on your doorstep for safety and hygiene concerns. If you are running late and will not be available for the delivery of your frozen items, please send us an email at shop@foodafricanashop.com as soon as possible to reschedule your delivery.
